【Other name】 fir wood

[Source] Medicinal material source: the heartwood and branches of the Chinese fir plant of the Cupressaceae family.

[Original form] Evergreen tree, up to 30m tall, with a chest circumference of 2.5-3m. The crown of a young tree is spire-shaped, while the crown of a mature tree is conical. The bark is gray-brown and cracks into long strips and falls off. The large branches are flat, and the small branches are nearly opposite or whorled. The leaves radiate on the main branches and are arranged in two rows on the side branches. They are linear-lanceolate, leathery, slightly curved, hard, 2-6 cm long, with fine teeth on the edges, narrow stomatal bands on both sides of the midrib above, and a white powdery stomatal band on each side of the midrib below. Monoecious; male cones are conical and clustered at the top of branches; female cones are solitary or in groups of 2-4 at the top of branches, oval, with bract scales and pearl scales combined, the pearl scales have 3 lobes at the tip, and 3 ovules on the ventral surface. The cones are nearly spherical or oval, 2.5-5m long, 3-4cm in diameter, with bracts triangular and broadly oval, persistent. The seeds are oblong, flat, 6-8mm long, about 5mm wide, dark brown, with narrow wings on both sides. The flowering period is April and the cones mature in late October.

[Habitat distribution] It is widely cultivated in the Yangtze River Basin and the area south of Qinling Mountains in my country.

【Cultivation】 1. Biological characteristics: Chinese fir is a subtropical plant that likes to grow in the middle and lower parts of the mountains, with deep soil, loose texture, rich in organic matter and good drainage in acidic soil. It avoids saline and alkaline soil. It grows poorly in areas with poor soil and dry weather.

【Chemical composition】 Wood contains volatile oil. The main ingredients are cedrol and the like.

【Functions and indications】 Expel evil and remove filth; remove dampness and disperse toxins; reduce adverse qi; promote blood circulation and relieve pain. It is mainly used for beriberi, swollen and fullness, running pig, cholera, abdominal distension and pain, rheumatism, swelling and pain caused by falls, bleeding caused by trauma, and burns.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 15-30g. For external use: take appropriate amount, decoct in water, fumigate or wash; or burn and grind into powder for application.

【Note】 Do not take for a long time or in excess. It is forbidden for weak people to take it.

[Additional prescription] 杉 is pronounced as “彡” (shan). "Shuowen" says: "彡, the hair is decorated with patterns." The leaves of the fir are slender and parallel, like feathers, so it is named "彡" because of its pictographic meaning.檆, according to the legend of Xu Kai: "It is the current character for 杉." It was abbreviated as "煔." Lu Deming's "Erya Yinyi" says: "The word "煔" is sometimes written as "杉", which is the opposite of "苏咸". "郭" is pronounced as "芟", and is also pronounced as "纤." "沙" is the phonetic transcription of "杉". The word "檠" means "hold up", and it gets its name because of its high crown.

It is used to treat poisonous sores, beriberi, bloating and running pig, all of which are caused by the five qi being blocked and not rising or falling. This medicine has a fragrant smell, can lower the adverse qi, disperse the toxins, and has the function of opening up the internal organs.
