[Source] It is a plant of the genus Psychotria rubra (Lour.) Poir. of the Rubiaceae family. Its roots and leaves are used as medicine. Collected throughout the year, used fresh or washed, sliced ​​and dried.

[Original form] Evergreen shrub, 1 to 3 meters high. Young branches are nearly quadrangular, old branches are nearly round and smooth; branches have obvious nodes. Leaves are opposite, papery, elliptic-rectangular, 8-20 cm long, 2.5-5 cm wide, pointed or shortly acuminate at the apex, gradually narrowed at the base, with tufts of hairs in the axils of veins below, wavy edges, red when dry; stipules are broad, membranous, and fall off early. It blooms in autumn, with terminal and axillary panicles; calyx truncate; corolla funnel-shaped, money green or white, 5-lobed, lobes reversed outwards, with white hairs at the throat of the corolla. The drupe is nearly spherical, about 6 mm long, red and smooth when ripe. There are longitudinal grooves on the back of the seeds.

[Habitat distribution] It mostly grows in hills, slopes, and sparse forests in valleys. Distributed in southeastern provinces of my country.

【Chemical composition】 It reacts with lactones, steroids, tannins and organic acids.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, cold.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, detoxifies, reduces swelling and removes toxins. Roots and leaves : diphtheria, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, dysentery, typhoid fever, stomachache, rheumatic bone pain; leaves : external use to treat swelling and pain from falls, bleeding from trauma, snake bites, sores and swelling, and lower limb ulcers.

[Usage and Dosage] Root: 0.5-1 liang; fresh and tender leaves: 1-3 liang; apply the leaves externally in appropriate amount, mash the fresh leaves and apply to the affected area.

[Additional prescription] 1. Diphtheria: fresh and tender leaves of Rhizoma Cyperi. For children under 1 year old, take 1 liang 2 qian; for children between 1 and 3 years old, take 2 liang 4 qian; for children between 4 and 5 years old, take 3 liang; for children between 6 and 10 years old, take 5 liang. Boil in water and take in 4 doses.
