[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole plant and rhizome of Nanshan Teng, a dicotyledonous plant of the Apocynaceae family.

【Original form】 Thick and strong vine. Stems lenticel-filled. Branches with small tubercles. Leaves are opposite; petiole is 2.5-6cm long; leaf blade is broadly ovate or nearly circular, 8-15cm long, 5-12cm wide, with acute or short acuminate apex, truncated or shallowly cordate base, and almost glabrous. Umbrella-shaped cymes are axillary; drooping; calyx has 5 lobes, covered with soft hairs on the outside, with multiple glands on the bone surface; corolla is yellow-green, fragrant at night, 5-lobed, broadly ovate; corona lobes are attached to the back of stamens, fleshy and swollen; there is one pollinia in each locule, erect; ovary is sparsely pubescent, style is short, and stigma tip has a conical protrusion. The follicles are lanceolate-cylindrical, up to 12 cm long and about 3 cm in diameter. The exocarp is covered with white powder and has wrinkled ridges. The seeds are broadly ovate, flat, with thin edges up to 1.2 cm long and about 6 mm wide, with white silky hairs at the tip, up to 4.5 cm long. The flowering period is from April to September, and the fruiting period is from July to December. 0

[Chemical composition] Drevogenin A, B, D, and P[1-4] were isolated from the seeds. Dregoside A[5] and dregeosides AP1, Ao1, Aa1, A11, C11, Kp1, Ka1, H, Dp1, Da1, Gp1, Ga1[6-7] were isolated from the stems, among which dregeosides Ap1 and Ao1 have anti-cancer activity. α-Methylpachybioside and α-methyldredehongbioside were isolated from the roots [8].
