[Source] Medicinal material source: the root or whole herb of Artemisia australis of the Asteraceae family.

[Original form] Artemisia sphaerocephala is a perennial herb, 30-70cm tall. The main root is obvious, short and thick, with lateral roots; the rhizome is slightly short and thick. The stem is erect, solitary or in clusters of several, nearly glabrous, often densely pubescent at the base, and often with inflorescence branches at the top or bottom. The leaf blade is 2-5cm wide, usually deeply pinnately divided, with 5-7 lobes, broadly obovate, cuneate at the base, and palmately divided at the apex, sometimes spatulate with teeth or shallow lobes on the edges; the upper leaves are trilobed or unlobed, with linear lobes; all leaves are glabrous above and slightly pubescent beneath. The capitula is small, numerous, ovoid or nearly ovoid, 1-1.5mm in diameter, drooping, arranged in compound racemes at the top of the stem or branch ends; sessile or with short stalks, with linear bracts; the involucre is ovate, about 2mm long; the involucral bracts are 3-4 layers, glabrous, the outer layer is ovate, green on the back, with slightly membranous edges, the inner layer is oblong, with wide, membranous edges; there are 4-8 female flowers, the corolla is narrow and shaped, the style is extended, and the apex is 2-forked; there are 6-10 bisexual flowers, infertile. Achenes small, oblong. Flowering and fruiting period is from June to November.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown on hillsides, roadsides and forest edges.

[Chemical composition] The whole plant contains triacontanol, β-sitosterol, and α, ξ-amyrin [1]. It also contains volatile oils, the components of which are linalool, α-terpineol, γ-cadinene, calamenene, trans-caryoph-yllene, γ-muurolene and copaene [2].
