The base extends down the stem into a narrow wing. Inflorescence capitulate, solitary at branch end; involucre ovate, 3-5cm in diameter, covered with spider-like hairs; involucral bracts multi-layered, linear-lanceolate, with hard sharp tips, dark purple; corolla dark purple, all tubular flowers, 5 lobes, hooked inward at apex; anthers combined into sheath at tail, surrounding filaments. Achenes are oblong, about 5mm long, slightly flat, glabrous, and slightly skewed at the base; the pappus are dirty yellow, unequal in length, with small serrations, and united at the base. Flowering and fruiting period is August-September.
