The efficacy and function of Elaeagnus root

[Source] It is the root of Elaeagnus erythrorhizon, a plant of the Elaeagnaceae family. Dig up in September and October and dry in the sun.

[Properties] The dried roots are cylindrical and curved, usually cut into 30-35 cm long sections. They vary in thickness, with thick roots 3-3.5 cm in diameter and thin roots up to 1 cm in diameter. The appearance is earthy yellow, and after the root bark peels off, the yellow-white xylem is exposed. It is hard, with strong fibrous texture in the cross section and darker color in the center.

【Nature and flavor】 Sour, flat.

【Functions and indications】Relieves cough, stops bleeding, dispels wind, removes dampness, eliminates stagnation, and relieves sore throat. Treat cough and asthma, vomiting blood, hemoptysis, and bloody stool. Excessive menstruation, rheumatic joint pain, jaundice, diarrhea, infantile malnutrition, sore throat.

[Usage and Dosage] For internal use: decoct in water, 3-5 qian (1-2 liang for fresh); or soak in wine. For external use: decoct in water and wash.

[Additional prescription] ① Treating wind-cold and lung asthma: 1 liang of Elaeagnus root and 5 qian of brown sugar. Decoction in water and take after meals. ("Mindong Materia Medica")
