[Source] It is the root and stem bark of the false porcupine quill of the Berberidaceae family. Harvested in summer and autumn.

[Original form] An evergreen shrub, 0.5 to 1.5 meters high, with an erect stem, gray-yellow in color, and ridged; the thorns are three-pronged and 1 to 2.5 centimeters long. The leaves are clustered, thick leathery, hard, oblong-lanceolate, 3.5 to 8 cm long, 1 to 2.5 cm wide, with spiny serrations on the edges and a distinct midrib. The flowers are yellow, 5 to 15 clustered in the axils of thorns; there are 6 sepals with 2 to 3 bracteoles below; 6 petals; 6 stamens, anthers are dehiscent; ovary is superior, 1-chambered, with multiple ovules. The berry is obovate-oblong, red, covered with white powder, and contains 2 seeds.

[Habitat distribution] Grown beside ditches, river banks or hillsides. Distributed in Shaanxi, Gansu, Hubei and Sichuan.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, cold.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat, reduces inflammation, reduces swelling and relieves pain. Treat hepatitis, mouth ulcers, painful urination, and burns.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 3 to 5 qian. For external use: grind into powder and apply on skin.
