[Source] This product is the dried root of Stephania tetrandra S. Moore , a plant of the Menispermaceae family. Dig up in autumn, wash, remove the rough skin, sun-dry until half dry, cut into sections, cut the large ones longitudinally and dry.

[Properties] This product is irregular cylindrical, semi-cylindrical or block-shaped, mostly curved, 5 to 10 cm long. Diameter 1 to 5 cm. The surface is light gray-yellow, and there are often deep transverse grooves at the bends to form nodular tumor-like masses. It is heavy, solid, flat in cross section, grayish white, powdery, and has sparsely arranged radial texture. It has a faint smell and a bitter taste.

【Identification】 (1) Cross section of this product: the cork layer sometimes remains. The cortex has scattered groups of stone cells, often arranged tangentially. The phloem is wide. The cambium is ring-shaped. The xylem occupies the majority, and the rays are relatively wide; the vessels are sparse and arranged radially; there are wood fibers next to the vessels.
