[Original form] Variegated Maydens shrub, up to 3m tall. 1-2 year old branchlets with sharp thorns at tips, densely covered with short rusty hairs. Leaves are alternate; petioles are extremely short or nearly sessile; leaf blades are nearly leathery, broadly obovate to narrowly obovate, 1.5-4cm long, 1-2cm wide, with obtuse or slightly concave apex and sparsely crenate margins. Cymes are axillary; flowers are very small, 2-3mm in diameter, light green, and 5-merous; stamens are 5, attached below the edge of the disk; ovary base is fused to the disk, 2-chambered, with 2 ovules in each chamber, and stigma is 2-lobed. Capsule red, inverted cone-shaped. The seeds are dark brown with a short aril at the base.
