[Source] Medicinal material source: the roots and leaves of Guangxi Vernonia, a plant of the Asteraceae family.

[Original form] Guangxi Vernonia is a climbing shrub, 1.5-3m high. Young branches are covered with short soft hairs, old branches are brown or chestnut brown, becoming without obvious stripes and yellow sparse lenticels; buds are covered with rusty hairs. Leaves alternate; with short petioles; leaf blade obovate-oblong or long elliptic-pen-shaped, 4-14cm long, 1.5-6.5cm wide, pointed or acuminate at the apex, rarely obtuse or short-pointed, base cuneate-shaped and gradually narrowing into a thicker petiole 0.5-1cm long, entire or with sparse fine teeth at the front end, margin often with extremely narrow recurvature, 4-5 pairs of lateral veins, midrib and veinlets obviously protruding below, veinlets sparsely reticulate, brown or yellowish brown when dry, glabrous, glossy, with appressed short fine hairs below. There are 3-6 capitulums, usually born at the top of lateral branches or solitary leaf axils, arranged in dense or relatively dense racemes, up to 2 cm in diameter, with many florets; peduncle 3-10 mm long; involucre broad bell-shaped, 12-15 mm long, 15-20 mm wide, with about 5 layers of bracts, hard, often longer than the disk, the outer layer ovate, the inner layer gradually close to lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, with narrow membranous margins, all bracts glabrous on the back, only with soft cilia on the edges; receptacle slightly convex, 4-5 mm in diameter, with honeycomb-like pores; flowers numerous, all strong, corolla tubular, white, tube length 10-11 mm, eaves short, broad bell-shaped. Achenes are cylindrical, 7-9mm long, with 7 inconspicuous longitudinal ribs, glabrous or with sparse fine hairs on the upper part; pappus is yellow or light yellow brown, 2 layers, the outer layer is short, the inner layer is rough and hairy, about 12mm long, flat at the tip, with dense fine teeth. Flowering and fruiting period is from May to September.
