[Source] This product is the dried vine stem of Sargentodoxa cuneata (Oliv.) Rehd.et Wils., a plant of the Akebia family. Harvest in autumn and winter, remove side branches, cut into sections and dry.

[Properties] This product is cylindrical, slightly curved, 30 to 60 cm long and 1 to 3 cm in diameter. The surface is gray-brown and rough, and the outer skin often peels off in scales. The peeled areas are dark reddish-brown, and some have swollen nodes and slightly sunken branch or leaf marks. It is hard, with reddish-brown cortex in cross section and several places embedded in the wood. The wood is yellowish-white with many pore-like ducts and rays arranged radially. Slight smell, slightly astringent taste.

[Identification] 1. Cross-section of this product: The cork layer is composed of multiple rows of cells, containing brown-red substances. The cortical stone cells are often in groups, some of which contain prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate. The vascular bundle is extra-tough. Phloem secretory cells are often arranged tangentially and separated from sieve tube groups; there are a few stone cell groups scattered. The cambium within the bundle is obvious. The xylem vessels are mostly single and scattered, circular in shape, about 400 μm in diameter, and surrounded by wood fibers. The rays are broad, with more stone cells on the outside, some of which contain several prisms of calcium oxalate. Stone cell clusters can be seen in the medulla. The thin-walled cells contain brown or brownish-red substances.
