Side Effects of Red Ginseng

Side Effects of Red Ginseng

Red ginseng often appears in our lives and can be purchased in general pharmacies. Generally speaking, red ginseng has some nourishing, blood-replenishing and sedative effects. Many ordinary people use this health product. If there are elderly people in the family, there will usually be red ginseng in the home, because red ginseng can help the elderly replenish their vitality and relieve dizziness caused by blood deficiency.

Red ginseng, as a relatively effective health product, is very useful in daily life. In fact, red ginseng is entirely produced by human labor. However, red ginseng also has certain side effects, but people are not aware of it yet. Please read on.

The side effect of red ginseng is that it has a stimulating effect on the nervous system. The therapeutic dose can speed up impulse conduction and increase the intensity of conditioned reflexes. Adults who take ginseng root powder more than 0.3g per day for continuous use may experience toxic reactions such as insomnia, depression, and weight loss. When taken in large doses, blood sugar is significantly reduced and heart contractility is inhibited. Its action characteristics are similar to those of cardiac glycosides. It can lead to a drop in blood pressure, respiratory paralysis, skeletal muscle paralysis, etc. Therefore, when taking ginseng, one should master the principles of medication, prescribe medicine based on syndrome differentiation, and treat deficiency and supplement according to treatment. Blind abuse should be avoided.

Red ginseng is not suitable for people with Yin deficiency and hyperactivity of fire. Red ginseng is a very effective traditional Chinese medicine, but when taking it, you should also pay attention to its side effects. The most important side effect is that people with yin deficiency and hyperactivity of fire are not suitable for taking red ginseng.

Precautions for taking red ginseng

1. When using ginseng for diagnosis, it is important to understand its nature. Different ginseng types and processing methods produce different effects, which can be divided into three categories according to their medicinal properties: hot, warm and cool. It must be selected according to each person's physique and needs. For example, for patients with both Qi deficiency and Yang deficiency, symptoms of cold limbs and chills, women with excessive metrorrhagia or after surgery, it is advisable to use Korean red ginseng (also known as Goryeo ginseng, Biezhi ginseng), Jilin red ginseng, Japanese red ginseng and red ginseng root, which are hot ginsengs. For patients with Qi deficiency, thirst, dry throat, lack of body fluid, constipation and red tongue, it is advisable to use raw sun-dried ginseng, skin-tail ginseng and white ginseng root, which are cool ginseng.

2. Grasp the principles and strictly observe the taboos. "Essential Readings in the Medical Ancestral" says: "Ginseng...is the most beneficial among all herbs, but there are also some herbs that are not suitable for use. Nowadays, people have recorded its strengths and forgotten its weaknesses, picked out its flaws and discarded its merits. Some people use it at the wrong time, or use it inappropriately. Instead of enjoying its benefits, they only see its harms, which causes good medicines to be forgotten in the world, and unskilled workers are talking about it, which is really regrettable. ... The so-called lung heat that damages the lungs means that the lung pulse is strong and full; the fire energy is just rising, the blood is hot and running wildly; the qi is not yet weak, so it should not be used suddenly. When measles first occurs, the body is hot but the spots have not yet formed; when typhoid fever first occurs, the symptoms are not yet determined and the evil heat is just raging; if it is used by mistake, there is little chance of recovery." Ginseng is mainly used to replenish deficiency. It can aggravate the symptoms of palpitations, dizziness, insomnia, etc. caused by heat congestion but yin deficiency and excessive fire. Taking ginseng can make edema worse due to damp-heat stagnation. Taking ginseng often increases blood pressure in patients with hypertension. If abused, it can cause cerebral hemorrhage. Therefore, ginseng is prohibited for use in cases of excess heat syndrome such as excessive qi, fever, difficulty in urination and defecation, dry throat, dry mouth, and nosebleed caused by dryness and heat. It should also be avoided in cases of Yin deficiency and Yang hyperactivity, hot flashes and bone steaming, lung heat and excessive phlegm, cough and shortness of breath, liver yang hyperactivity, dizziness and red eyes, etc. Ginseng is incompatible with Veratrum and is afraid of Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, so they should not be used together.

The above explains some of the side effects of red ginseng. I hope you can keep them in mind after reading it. Health supplements don't only have benefits, they certainly have their disadvantages as well, and users just need to pay attention to the knowledge. Because red ginseng is a tonic, don’t eat too much, otherwise your body will not be able to bear it.
