[Source] This product is the dried flower buds of Eugenia caryophllata Thunb., a plant of the Myrtaceae family. Pick the flower buds when they turn from green to red and dry them in the sun.

[Properties] This product is slightly in the shape of a pestle, 1 to 2 cm long. The corolla is spherical, with a diameter of 0.3 to 0.5 cm, and has 4 petals, which are clasped in a complex shingle shape, brown to brownish yellow, with stamens and styles inside the petals. When crushed, numerous yellow granular anthers can be seen. The calyx tube is cylindrical, slightly flat, and sometimes slightly curved, 0.7-1.4 cm long, 0.3-0.6 cm in diameter, reddish brown or tan, with 4 triangular sepals on the upper part, separated in a cross shape. Solid texture, rich in oil. It has a strong aroma, spicy taste and a numbing tongue feeling.

【Identification】 (1) Cross section of the middle part of the calyx tube of this product: one row of epidermal cells with a thick cuticle. There are 2 to 3 rows of radially extended elliptical oil chambers scattered on the outside of the cortex, 150 to 200 μm long; underneath there are 20 to 50 small double-tough vascular bundles, arranged in a ring intermittently, with a few pericycle fibers on the periphery of the vascular bundles, with thick walls and lignified. The inner side is composed of several rows of thin-walled cells with large intercellular spaces. There are numerous tiny vascular bundles scattered among the central column parenchyma tissue, and the parenchyma cells contain numerous tiny calcium oxalate clusters. The powder is dark reddish brown. The fibers are fusiform, blunt-rounded at the apex, with thicker walls, numerous pollen grains, triangular in polar view, biconvex in equatorial view, and with three secondary grooves. There are numerous calcium oxalate clusters with a diameter of 4 to 26 μm, which exist in smaller thin-walled cells. The oil chambers are mostly broken, the boundaries of the secretory cells are unclear, and they contain yellow oily substances.
