[Original form] Tube crown flower, perennial herb. The rhizome is slender and creeping; the stem is erect, often with the base prostrate above the ground, 250-70cm high, leafless below the middle, obtusely quadrangular, simple or sometimes branched. Leaves are opposite; petiole is 0.5-3cm long, nearly sessile near the leaf; leaf blade is nearly membranous, ovate-lanceolate, 3-10cm long, 2.5-5cm wide, with acute tip, broad cuneate base, sparsely callose and coarsely serrated margins, green above, very sparsely with flat setae at nodes, lighter below, finely pubescent on veins, 4-6 pairs of lateral veins. The raceme is terminal, simple or sometimes composed of inflorescences; bracteoles are opposite, persistent, ciliate, lanceolate, 4-10mm long; calyx is extremely small when flowering, only about 4mm long, greatly enlarged when fruiting, up to 1.2cm long, broadly campanulate, pubescent on the outside, with 5 calyx teeth, more or less 2-lipped; corolla is pink, purple to lavender blue, up to 2.5cm long, tubular, slightly enlarged at the throat, with short 5 shallow lobes, 2-lipped, upper lip 4-lobed, lobes oval, lower lip slightly longer, nearly round, slightly concave; stamens 4, lower pair longer inside; stigma 2-lobed, ovary glabrous. The nutlets are oval, yellowish brown, dotted, and have a small white mark at the base. The flowering period is July-October, and the fruiting period is October-November.
