[Source] Medicinal material source: the adventitious roots on the rhizomes of ginseng, a plant of the Araliaceae family.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 30-70cm tall. The roots are enlarged, fleshy, cylindrical or spindle-shaped, branched at the ends, and have a light yellow outer skin. The leaves are palmate compound leaves with long petioles; the number of whorled leaves varies depending on the years of growth, generally one trifoliate leaf for one-year-olds and up to six leaflets for two-year-olds; there are 5 leaflets, occasionally 7, and the petioles are 1-3cm long; the leaflets are lanceolate or ovate, the lower 2 leaflets are smaller, 2-4cm long, 1-1.5cm wide, and the upper 3 leaflets are 4.5-15cm long, 2.2-4cm wide, with acuminate apex, cuneate base, finely serrated edges, green above, with sparse fine bristles along the veins, and glabrous below. The umbel is single and terminal, with a peduncle 15-25 cm long, and each inflorescence has more than 10-80 flowers, which are integrated into a spherical shape; the flowers are small, with a diameter of 2-3 mm; the calyx is green and 5-lobed; there are 5 petals, which are light yellow-green and ovate; there are 5 stamens, and the filaments are very short; the ovary is inferior, with 2 styles, fused at the base and separated at the top. The fruit is a drupe-like berry, oblate, 5-9mm in diameter, numerous, and clustered in a head. It is bright red when ripe. There are two seeds, milky white, 4-5mm in diameter, flat and oval, with one side truncated. The flowering period is from May to June, and the fruiting period is from June to September.
