[Source] It is the tuberous root of the Menispermum officinale plant of the Menispermaceae family .

[Original form] Perennial bare herbaceous vine, up to several meters long. The tuber is disc-shaped, with a thick, dark gray-brown cortex and a rough surface. The flesh is yellowish-white, hard, thick and powdery. The upper part of the stem is twined, cylindrical, or slightly angular, red, and densely covered with light green dots; the lower part is mostly buried in the ground, woody, gray-brown, and has many tubercles. The leaves are leathery, peltate, nearly round, obtuse and slightly concave at the tip, with a small pointed protrusion, slightly truncated or rounded at the base, entire, dark green and slightly shiny above, light green and white below; the petiole is slender, red, and more than 8 cm long. Flowers are unisexual and dioecious; inflorescences are axillary, composed of a few small cymes forming a flat-topped umbel; flowers are dark purple with white powder and small; male flowers have 5-6 sepals, obovate, with pointed tips; petals are 3-5, less than half the length of sepals, broadly obcune-shaped and rounded; stamens are fused into a shield shape, with polyanthocarpic stamens, yellow; the outer flowers of the female inflorescence have 1 obovate sepal and 2-3 short cuneate petals of the same color, while the inner flowers mostly have only petals, with a single carpel, 5-7-lobed stigma, and a green round glandular disk at the base. The drupe is round, green to red; the seeds are ring-shaped and white. Flowering period is from May to June. The fruiting period is from August to September.

[Habitat distribution] It likes to grow in limestone areas, hedges or rocky hills and thorny bushes. It is distributed in Yunnan and Sichuan.

[Chemical composition] The whole plant contains 0.4-0.7% biota, and the root tubers contain 2.2% biota, which are geocompatible alkali and 16-oxo-geocompatible alkali.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, pungent, cold, poisonous.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies, eliminates phlegm, stops malaria and relieves pain. Treat carbuncle, swelling, throat blockage, malaria, and stomachache.

【Usage and Dosage】 For external use: mash and apply or grind into powder and apply. For internal use: decoct in water, 0.5-1 qian; or grind into powder, 2-5 fen.

【Note】 Use with caution when taking internally.

[Additional prescription] ① To treat carbuncle, furuncle and swelling on the back, which do not break out: Mix egg white and apply it on the affected area, leaving the top of the swelling, and the swelling will break out overnight. [Clinical application] Treatment of stomachache: Take the root tuber of the Herba Lycopodii, grind it into powder and press it into tablets, 0.3 grams per tablet, take 2 to 4 tablets each time, 3 times a day. All 48 patients with stomach pain found analgesic effect after taking the medicine.
