【Alias】 Bai Ci Ye, Bai Le Yuan

[Source] Medicinal material source: The tender branches and leaves of the Araliaceae plant Bletilla striata.

[Original form] Climbing shrub, 1-7m high. The branches are thin and spread out, the old branches are grayish white, the new branches are brownish yellow, and there are sparse downward thorns, which have hooked tips and flat bases. Leaves are alternate, with 3 leaflets, rarely 4-5; petiole 2-6cm long, with or without thorns; petiolules 2-8mm long; leaf blade elliptic-ovate to elliptic-oblong, rarely obovate, the central one is the largest, 4-10cm long, 36.5cm wide, pointed or shortly acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base, sparsely bristled on the upper veins, glabrous beneath, with fine serrations or sparsely obtuse teeth on the margin, and 5-6 pairs of lateral veins. Umbels 3-10, rarely up to 20, forming terminal umbels or panicles, 1.5-3.5cm in diameter; peduncle 2-7mm long, glabrous; calyx tube edge with 5 small teeth; flowers yellow-green, 5 petals, triangular-ovate, about 2mm long, recurved when flowering; 5 stamens, filaments about 3mm long; ovary 2-chambered, styles 2, fused at base or below middle. The drupe is berry-like, oblate, about 5mm in diameter, and black when ripe. The flowering period is from August to November, and the fruiting period is from September to December.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter; pungent; slightly cold

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies; promotes blood circulation and reduces swelling; removes dampness and heals sores. It is mainly used for colds and fever; cough and chest pain; dysentery; rheumatism and pain; injuries from falls; fractures; knife wounds; carbuncles, furuncles, and boils; mouth sores; eczema; scabies; poisonous insect bites

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 9-30g; or soak in boiling water. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application; or decoct it in water for washing.
