[Original form] Sunflower thistle is a perennial herb. The rhizome is thick. Stemless or almost stemless. Leaves are basal and rosette-shaped; petioles are short; leaf blades are narrowly lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, 15-30cm long, 3-6cm wide, acute or obtuse at the apex, gradually narrowed at the base, green above, light green below, covered with sparse white long soft hairs on both sides, pinnately lobed or deeply lobed, with oblong lobes at the base, and small spines at the top and edges. The capitula is sessile or nearly sessile, and several of them are clustered in rosettes of leaves; the bracts are lanceolate, 2-3 cm long, with sharp thorns at the tip, and small thorns on the edges from the middle or from the base. The tip of the innermost bracts is soft; the flowers are all tubular, with purple-red corolla, about 2.3 cm long, the lower narrow tube is about 1.4 cm long, and the upper wide tube is about 0.9 cm long. Achenes are oblong, 4-5mm long, light grayish yellow; the pappus are dirty white, feathery, and nearly as long as the corolla. Flowering and fruiting period is July to September.
