Iris is also known as Malian, Malan, Malan flower, Hanpu, Male, etc. It is a perennial herbaceous perennial plant of the genus Iris in the family Iridaceae. It is a variant of Iris alba and a perennial dense herb.

The rhizomes and leaves are thick, the fibrous roots are dense and developed, can reach more than 1 meter in length, and are distributed in an umbrella shape.

The leaves are basal, broadly linear, up to 1250px in height, 0.4~25px in width, gray-green in color, with a pedicel about 250px in height, 2~4 flowers, which are light blue, blue or bluish-purple with darker stripes on the perianth; the capsule is oblong-column with 6 distinct ribs and a short beak at the top; 4~150px in length; the seeds are irregular polyhedrons, brown in color, slightly shiny, and mature in September. The flowering period is from May to June, and the fruiting period is from June to September.

It grows in wasteland, roadsides, and hillside grasslands, especially in overgrazed saline grasslands.

Distributed in North Korea, Russia, India and China.

The flowers, seeds and roots of Iris can all be used as medicine. The flowers can be dried and taken as a diuretic and laxative; the seeds and roots can remove dampness and heat, stop bleeding, and detoxify. The seeds have the effects of reducing fever, detoxifying, and expelling insects.

As a fiber plant, it can replace hemp to produce paper and rope. Its leaves are the raw material for weaving handicrafts, and its roots can be used to make brushes.

Iris has been widely cultivated in China since ancient times. There are records of Iris in Confucius' "Family Analects", Qu Yuan's "Li Sao", Li Shizhen's "Compendium of Materia Medica", etc. As an excellent soil and water conservation, grazing, ornamental and medicinal plant, it has a place in history and nature.
