What are the effects and functions of cassia leaves?

Medicinal value

Nature and flavor

Fruit: sweet, sour, flat.

Root: spicy, slightly warm.

Function and indications

Fruit: Clears the lungs and relieves cough, promotes blood circulation and stops bleeding. Used for hemoptysis due to tuberculosis, bronchitis, epistaxis, hematemesis, and sore throat.

Root: Strengthens the stomach, promotes qi circulation, activates blood circulation and dispels wind. Used for gastritis, loss of appetite, rheumatic pain, and trauma.

Dosage

Each is 0.5 to 1 liang, decocted in water and taken orally

Edible value

The fruit is red when ripe, tastes sweet and sour, and is edible, and can clear away heat and stimulate the appetite.

Material value

The wood is hard and has a fine texture, and can be used for construction, furniture, etc.

Morphological characteristics

It is a tree up to 17 meters high, with a straight trunk; the bark is dark brown and longitudinally fissured; the leaves are alternate, leathery, oblong-elliptic to obovate-elliptic, 7-15 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, with a short pointed tip or a short tail, a cuneate or nearly rounded base, entire or with irregular, shallowly serrated edges, dark green on the surface, light green on the back, glabrous on both sides, with 6-10 pairs of lateral veins, slightly raised on the surface and distinctly raised on the back; young leaves are black when dry; petiole 5-15 mm long; stipules lanceolate, caducous early. The male inflorescence is capitate, obovate to oblong, 2.5~12 mm long and 2.7~7 mm in diameter. The male flower tepals are 2~4-lobed, united at the base, 0.5~0.7 mm long, and contain one stamen. The female inflorescence is nearly capitate, the female flower tepals are tubular, and the styles extend beyond the bracts. The aggregate fruit is nearly spherical, with a rough and hairy surface, about 5 cm in diameter, red when ripe, fleshy, brown when dry, and the bracts are persistent; there are 10 to 15 drupes. The peduncle is 1.5-5 mm long. The flowering period is from April to May.
