Indications

It is mainly used to treat edema due to water vapor, phlegm, cough, malaria, bacillary dysentery, scrofula, tuberculous fistula and osteomyelitis.

Physiological characteristics

Annual or biennial herb, 10 to 750 cm tall, the whole plant contains latex. The stem base is branched and purple-red. The leaves are alternate, obovate or spoon-shaped, 1-75px long, 0.7-25px wide, slightly concave at the tip, with fine serrations above the middle of the edge, and sessile. There are 5 leaf-like bracts arranged in whorls at the top of the stem; the inflorescence is polychasine, terminal, with 5 cymes, each cyme has 3 cymelets, and each cymelet is divided into 2 forks for the third time; the cup-shaped cyme is bell-shaped, the top of the involucre is 4-lobed, with 4 glands between the lobes, and is kidney-shaped; the ovary is 3-chambered and has 3 styles. Capsule glabrous. The seeds are ovate, with a raised reticulate surface. The flowering period is from April to May, and the fruiting period is from June to July. Grown by ditches, roadsides and fields. Distributed in all provinces and regions of the country except Xinjiang and Tibet.
