Traditional Chinese medicine often uses perilla seeds to treat whooping cough and ascariasis in infants and young children. The following is an introduction to the specific effects of perilla seeds.

The leaves of Su Ma Zi can disperse the external cold and have a strong diaphoretic effect. They are used for wind-cold external symptoms, such as aversion to cold, fever, and no sweating. They are often used together with ginger. If the external symptoms are accompanied by qi stagnation, they can be used together with Cyperus rotundus, dried tangerine peel, etc. Perilla leaf is used to treat spleen and stomach qi stagnation, chest tightness, and nausea. Perilla seed can reduce qi and eliminate phlegm, relieve cough and asthma, and moisten the intestines and promote bowel movements. It is used for phlegm accumulation, qi stagnation, cough, asthma, dry intestines and constipation.

Pharmacological action:

1. Effect on blood lipids: Feeding chickens with feed containing perilla oil can reduce the plasma cholesterol level of chickens, but it has no such effect on mice, and causes hair loss and skin damage on the neck of mice; feeding rabbits with feed containing perilla oil can increase their body weight and liver weight, but has no obvious effect on the cholesterol content in plasma and liver.

2. The antibacterial experiment shows that perilla oil (0.1%) has an inhibitory effect on Proteus, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium and molds in nature. Its effect on mold and yeast is significantly stronger than 0.05% paraben and 0.3% benzoic acid.

3. Antiseptic and antioxidant effects: The defatted ethanol extract of Perilla seeds has antiseptic and antioxidant effects. Can be used for long-term storage of food and medicine. Its antioxidant effect is stronger than that of 0.02% BHT (2, 6-di-tert-butyl-p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol).

Clinical Reports:

1. For the treatment of asthma in infants and young children, use 4g each of perilla seed, bombyx batryticatus, Fritillaria cirrhosa, ginkgo, and apricot kernel, 2g each of ephedra, indigo, and licorice, and 3g of polygala. Take 1 dose daily, decocted in water. Add or subtract according to symptoms. 41 cases were treated and all were cured. The symptoms were completely relieved within 3 days in 38 cases, and relieved within 3 to 6 days in 3 cases. [Guangxi Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine 1990, 13(6): 16]

2. For the treatment of whooping cough, take equal parts of Fritillaria cirrhosa, rice husk, perilla seed, Stemona tuber, apricot kernel, tangerine peel, and Pinellia ternata, and grind them into a very fine powder. Take 0.5g each time for each year, 3 to 4 times a day. For children under 1 year old, take 0.25g each time, 3 times a day. 300 children were treated with an effective rate of 100%. The minimum duration of medication is 3 days, the maximum is 10 days, and the average is 5 days.

3. To treat ascariasis, mash or chew raw perilla seeds. Adults: 50-70g; children aged 4-10 years: 20-50g, 2-3 times a day, on an empty stomach, for 3 consecutive days. For stomachache, biliary colic and vomiting caused by ascaris, use 3g of Zanthoxylum bungeanum and 250ml of rice vinegar, boil them in water and drink it all at once. After the ascaris is gone and the pain stops, take perilla seed. Results: 92 cases expelled ascaris after taking the medicine, with the number of worms ranging from 2 to 47.
