[Original morphology] Biennial herb, sometimes cultivated as annual herb, green, with thick roots and a short neck at the top; the stem is erect, 30 to 40 cm high, and branched at the top. The basal leaves are densely grown, thick and wrinkled, ovate to obovate, 10-20 cm long, obtuse at the apex, entire or with inconspicuous sparse round teeth, or with one or two pairs of unclear lobes at the base; the petiole is white, 8-20 mm wide; the stem leaves are round or round-ovate, sessile and clasping the stem, with entire margins. The racemes are few and sturdy; the flowers are yellow, 6-10 mm long, shorter than the pedicels; the petals are cruciform with long claws; there are 6 stamens, 4 long and 2 short; the stigma is capitate. The silique is cylindrical, 2 to 4 cm long, with a thick beak. Seeds are spherical and dark brown.

[Chemical composition] 1 jin of Chinese kilogram (commercial product) contains 7.5 grams of protein, 0.8 grams of fat, 12 grams of sugar, 6.6 grams of ash; 332 milligrams of calcium, 127 milligrams of phosphorus, 5.7 milligrams of iron, 5.1 milligrams of carotene, 0.16 milligrams of thiamine, 0.29 milligrams of riboflavin, 2.9 milligrams of niacin, and 172 milligrams of vitamin C.
