[Source] It is the ripe fruit of the sweet orange plant of the Rutaceae family. Harvest the fruits when ripe.

[Original form] Evergreen small tree, 2 to 3 meters high. There are many branches, which are glabrous, and the twigs are flat and angular, without thorns or with a few thorns. The leaves are degenerate into simple leaves: the petiole is 0.8-1.8 cm long, the leaf wings are narrow, 2-3 mm wide, and there is a distinct septum at the junction with the leaf; the leaf blade is elliptical, 6-12 cm long, 3-5.5 cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, broadly cuneate at the base, with inconspicuous wavy serrations on the edge; leathery. The calyx is cup-shaped, 3-5 lobed, with ovate lobes and narrow pointed tips; there are 4-8 petals, usually 5, oblong, up to 1.5 cm long and 0.7 cm wide; there are many stamens, and the filaments are often clustered and fused on the disk; the ovary is superior, with 10-13 chambers, each with 4-8 ovules, and the style is thick and often falls off early. The fruit is large, spherical, 7 to 9 cm in diameter, orange-yellow when ripe, with large, round oil cells that are prominent, juicy and sweet. Flowering period is May. Fruiting period is November.

[Habitat distribution] It is cultivated in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Fujian, Taiwan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan and other places.

[Chemical composition] The fruit contains flavonoids, lactones, alkaloids, organic acids, etc. Among the flavonoids are hesperidin, naringenin, isosakuratin-7-rutoside, naringenin-4'-glucoside-7-rutoside, naringin, limonin-3-β-P-glucoside and OD-xylosylvitexin. Among lactones, there is the bitter dilactone component limonin, namely phellodendron lactone and its derivative limonolactone. The bioalkali is narcotine. The main organic acids are citric acid and malic acid. It also contains phloroglucinol-β-D-glucoside, sugars, vitamins, calcium, phosphorus, iron, etc.

[Pharmacological action] The seed extract of this variety is used in Africa to treat malaria. It can shrink the enlarged spleen, but it can cause severe respiratory depression.

[Properties and flavors] ① "Southern Yunnan Materia Medica": "Slightly warm in nature. Pungent and slightly bitter in taste."

[Functions and indications] It can promote the flow of qi that is blocked in the Jueyin meridian, stop the pain in the left rib caused by liver qi, relieve bloating caused by the downward movement of qi, and promote the flow of milk blocked in the Yangming meridian.

[Additional prescription] To treat breast obstruction, redness, swelling, hardness, pain, chills and fever in women: 2 qian of finely ground dried orange seeds.
