The efficacy and function of Pearl Ginseng

The efficacy and function of Pearl Ginseng

As people's living standards continue to improve, health and longevity are gradually valued by us, so nowadays health-preserving diet therapy methods are very popular, the trend of traditional Chinese medicine is becoming more and more popular, and Chinese medicine has once again occupied people's vision. Today we will talk about the Chinese medicine Pearl Ginseng.

[Other names] Pearl ginseng (Supplement to Compendium of Materia Medica), Pearl ginseng, Gedasigensis (The Empirical Identification Method of the Shape and Properties of Chinese Medicines), Snow Panax notoginseng (Discussion on Chinese Medicinal Material Varieties), Niuziqi, Kouziqi (Compilation of Commonly Used Folk Herbs).

[Source] It is the beaded rhizome of Panax notoginseng , a plant of the Araliaceae family. Dig up in autumn, remove the stems, fibrous roots and thin rhizomes, dry them in the air for 6 to 7 days to loosen the skin, or soak them in water, then step on the skin, put them into the pot and cook them thoroughly, or mix them with appropriate amount of honey (0.25 catties of honey per kg), and when the water is almost dry, take them out and dry them in the sun or on the kang. The Niuziqi produced in Sichuan and other places is harvested in spring or autumn. After cutting off the stems, fibrous roots and thin parts, it is dried in the sun.

[Original morphology] The plant morphology is detailed in the entry for "Panax japonica".

【Habitat distribution】 Mainly produced in Yunnan.

[Properties] The dried rhizome is irregularly conical, about 1.5 to 4 cm long and 1 to 3 cm in diameter. The surface is yellow-brown to translucent amber, and a few are black-brown. There are fine longitudinal wrinkles and raised root residues, and occasionally bamboo-node patterns. It is hard and not easy to break. The cross section is yellow-white, uneven and granular. It has a special smell and tastes bitter. The best ones are large, plump, bright, without bamboo knots or rough skin.

[Pharmacological action] Oral administration of the decoction of Glehnia littoralis has anti-inflammatory effects in rats. It has a preventive effect on egg white, dextran or formaldehyde "arthritis" and cotton ball granuloma at 10 grams/kg, and also has a therapeutic effect on formaldehyde "arthritis". The sugar content in Panax notoginseng is 13%, but its effect in promoting glycogen accumulation in the liver of hungry mice is not due to the sugar content. Its anti-inflammatory effect seems to have nothing to do with the stimulation of the pituitary-adrenal system, but may be caused by the presence of certain substances with glucocorticoid-like effects.

[Processing] Pick out impurities, crush or moisten with water, slice and dry.

【Nature and flavor】 Bitter, sweet, cold.

【Meridian】 "Sichuan Chinese Medicine Annals": "enters the liver and stomach meridians."

【Functions and indications】Nourishing yin, clearing the lungs, dispersing blood stasis, stopping bleeding, and relieving pain. It is used to treat fever, thirst, yin deficiency cough, tuberculosis and vomiting blood, epistaxis, sore throat, rheumatoid arthritis, infantile convulsions, and trauma.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoct in water, 2 to 3 qian; grind into powder and make into pills, powder or soak in wine. For external use: grind into powder and apply on skin.

[Additional prescription] To treat infantile convulsions: 73 grams of button seeds. Grind into powder, take one gram each time, three times a day, with warm water. (Shaanxi Chinese Herbal Medicine)

[Explanations by various scholars] "Compendium of Materia Medica" states: "Pearl ginseng has a thick flavor and a heavy body. Its properties are roughly the same as those of Western ginseng, except that it has the function of clearing away heat. When the heat is removed, the fire will not punish the metal and the lungs will benefit. It is not really a tonic. It comes from central Fujian. You need to peel it and then soak it in boiling water, because its bitter taste is on the outer skin. The bitterness decreases towards the center and it becomes slightly sweeter."
