[Source] It is the stem of the Hamamelidaceae plant. Available all year round. Chop and dry or use fresh.

[Original form] Tree, 20 meters high. The trunk is thick, straight, bare and smooth; the twigs have swollen stipule rings and nodes. Simple leaves are alternate; leathery; broadly ovate, 10-17 cm long, 9-13 cm wide, gradually pointed at apex, cordate at base, undivided or palmately 3-lobed, with 5-7 palmate veins; petiole 3-6 cm long; 2 bract-like stipules, 2-3 cm long, thick leathery, wrapping around the bud, falling off. The capitula is axillary, with 10 to 12 flowers; the flowers are bisexual or unisexual; the calyx teeth are short and scale-like; the petals are 2 to 5, linear, half the length of the style, or absent; the stamens are 10 to 14, the same length as the style, and the anthers are ellipsoidal. Filaments are filiform; ovary is semi-inferior, 2-chambered, each chamber has 3 ovules, and 2 styles. Infructescence capitate 2 cm in diameter; capsule ovate. Seeds winged, shiny black.

[Habitat distribution] Growing in dense forests in mountains. Distributed in Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi and other places.

【Nature and flavor】 Sour, astringent, warm, slightly toxic.

【Functions and indications】 Relaxes muscles and tendons, promotes blood circulation, activates collaterals and relieves pain. Treat rheumatoid arthritis and sciatica.
