Researchers recently discovered a well-preserved Middle Jurassic dragonfly fossil dating back 165 million years in Ningcheng County, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, and named it Ningcheng Khitan dragonfly . This discovery provides new evidence for studying the natural history and evolution of dragonflies.

The fossil was discovered by a team of scholars from Capital Normal University and Guangzhou University and the Ningcheng National Geopark Administration in the Middle Jurassic Yanliao Biota in Daohugou, Ningcheng County. Shang Jing'an, director of the Ningcheng National Geopark Administration, said that the staff of the Geopark discovered the exposed dragonfly fossil during their inspection of paleontological fossil protection, and immediately organized experts to conduct on-site verification and research, and took measures to protect it.

"The newly discovered fossils are a relatively complete supplement to the research on the family of Elegant Dragons," said Ren Dong, a professor at the School of Life Sciences of Capital Normal University. This fossil is the most complete Elegant Dragon fossil preserved to date, with wings, a body, and genitals. The most rare thing is that by observing the genitals, it was found that it was a female individual.
