Hangzhou Research Institute of Hard Science | Build a 3D map with just a “backpack”!

Radar, communication, navigation, antenna, optoelectronics... The design and manufacturing level of these high-precision, high-performance complex electronic equipment is an important manifestation of the country's overall scientific and technological level and strength. To show the "hard power" of Xidian University's new force in the information field and to spread scientific concepts and cutting-edge knowledge in the field of electronic information, Xidian Hangzhou Research Institute launched the "Hard Science Popularization" series of columns to explain the things in the field of electronic information to the public! This column will reveal the mysterious "backpack" radar for you.

A "backpack" builds a 3D map

What do you usually put in your backpack? Computer? Books? Let me tell you! In the past, backpacks probably contained daily necessities, but have you ever thought of putting a radar in your backpack?

The measurement artifact I’d like to introduce to you today is a backpack laser radar. When you use it, it feels like walking with a large travel bag on your back, so we also call it a “backpack” radar.

This measuring tool is equipped with a 360° panoramic camera to obtain high-precision three-dimensional point cloud data of the surrounding environment in real time, and simultaneously obtain image data, assisting laser point cloud data for integrated indoor and outdoor measurement.

The compact backpack radar can not only be used in underground space modeling, urban road and building scanning, three-dimensional reconstruction and digital protection of natural landscapes, but can also be used in traffic accident scene investigation, route planning and many other aspects, and can contribute significantly to the construction of smart cities.

Science and technology are the primary productive forces. In the field of intelligent perception and intelligent computing for unmanned scenarios, the Intelligent Perception Laboratory of Xidian Hangzhou Research Institute focuses on information detection and intelligent perception, and studies the perception, sampling, processing, identification and fusion system construction of information through microwaves, light, sound and other means. Combined with the economic development needs of the Yangtze River Delta, it will fully empower smart cities, security alerts, social governance, ecological protection, urban green plant biomass/carbon sinks, disaster awareness and other application fields, promote the integration of "government, industry, academia, research and application", and help the high-quality development of the digital economy.
