Why do we still have bad breath?

What is Bad Breath

What we commonly call "bad breath" is also called "bad breath". It is more common in the elderly and is the main symptom of most patients visiting the dentistry department. Bad breath is an unpleasant odor that occurs in the mouth and nearby organs, including the throat, digestive tract, etc. It is a common oral problem.

How does bad breath form?

Bad breath caused by normal diet

Due to regional differences and personal eating habits, the causes of bad breath vary from person to person.

1. Garlic. "If you don't add garlic to your noodles, the flavor will be half gone." Residents in Shandong, Shaanxi, Northeast China and other places like to eat garlic, which will temporarily cause bad breath after eating.

2. **Durian. **Durian, as the "king of tropical fruits", contains sulfides that emit a strong odor.

3. People who like to smoke, drink, drink coffee , eat coriander, stinky tofu, canned herring and other foods are prone to bad breath.

If you do not rinse your mouth immediately after eating these foods, it will cause bad breath. For foods with strong odors, no matter how much you brush your teeth and rinse your mouth, you still cannot completely eliminate the odor in the short term.

Bad breath caused by pathological diseases

1. Bad breath caused by oral diseases

Studies have shown that 80% to 85% of pathological oral odor comes from oral diseases. The special physiological structure of the tongue dorsum provides a good microbial environment for bacteria, so tongue coating is also considered to be the biggest cause of oral odor. Periodontal disease, dental pulp disease, poor restorations, oral mucosal diseases, and a variety of diseases within the scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery can also cause or aggravate bad breath.

2. Bad breath caused by gastrointestinal diseases

Clinical experience shows that sulfides produced by gastroesophageal reflux, gastric tumors, esophageal diverticulum, pyloric stenosis, Helicobacter pylori infection, duodenal foreign body infection, etc. are related to bad breath. Most patients with this type of bad breath suffer from chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, or have long-term clinical manifestations such as bloating, abdominal pain, and acid reflux.

3. Bad breath caused by respiratory diseases

In the respiratory system, under the conditions of tracheitis, bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, lung abscess and other diseases, tissue inflammation and necrosis produce irritating gases, especially in the case of combined cleft lip and palate, which aggravates the bad breath to a certain extent. About 10% of bad breath comes from infectious diseases in the anatomical areas of the ear, nose, throat and lower respiratory tract.

4. Bad breath caused by metabolic system diseases

Metabolic diseases such as leukemia, diabetes, renal failure, liver failure, fish odor, hypernatremia and cystinosis may increase bad breath to a certain extent. For example, when the condition of diabetic patients is serious, the breath they exhale will smell like rotten apples, uremia patients often have ammonia bad breath, and organophosphorus pesticide poisoning often has pungent garlic bad breath, etc.

5

Other causes of bad breath

Patients who take chemical drugs such as paracetamol, chloral hydrate, dimethyl sulfoxide for a long time, patients with ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, liver and spleen problems, and people who have long-term heavy psychological stress are more likely to suffer from bad breath.

Prevention of bad breath

Maintain oral hygiene by brushing and flossing frequently

The most important thing to prevent bad breath is to keep your mouth clean. You can choose fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brush your teeth every morning and evening, and also brush your tongue. This can not only remove bad breath, but also better protect your teeth. Use dental floss after meals. Dental floss is thinner than toothpicks and can reduce damage to the gums.

Have regular dental checkups

A lot of bad breath originates from caries, dental pulp disease, etc. Regular dental examinations, teeth cleaning, and tartar removal (you can go to the dental clinic for a checkup once every six months) can detect the cause in time, treat it as soon as possible, and heal it as soon as possible.

Reduce the intake of strong-tasting foods

In your daily diet, you can reduce the intake of foods with pungent odors, or rinse your mouth immediately after eating. This can reduce the residual bacteria in the mouth to a certain extent, keep the oral environment relatively clean, and effectively reduce bad breath.

Early intervention for gastrointestinal or metabolic diseases

Bad breath caused by stomach heat should be treated by clearing the stomach and relieving heat, and Huanglian Shangqing Pills can be used; bad breath caused by phlegm heat should be treated by clearing heat and relieving lung heat, and Lingyang Qingfei Pills can be used; bad breath caused by food accumulation should be treated by digesting food, removing accumulation and relieving stagnation, and Baohe Pills can be used. Drinking some lemon water properly can promote gastrointestinal motility and relieve bad breath problems. At the same time, lemon water also has a bactericidal effect and can help the body excrete toxins. When the above measures cannot effectively relieve bad breath, you should seek medical attention in time to check whether there are metabolic diseases or other diseases and treat them as soon as possible.

Summarize

Bad breath is not a disease, but it is very troublesome to treat. Therefore, we should do a good job of personal oral hygiene, eat three meals on time, pick teeth and rinse mouth in time after eating, and remember to check whether there are other signs of disease when bad breath occurs, so as to find out and treat it as soon as possible. Drinking more water in daily life, increasing saliva secretion, and keeping emotional stability can help eliminate bad breath.
