A textbook on escaping danger during the 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Yibin, Sichuan

At 07:50 on April 6, 2022, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred in Xingwen County, Yibin City, Sichuan Province (28.22 degrees north latitude, 105.03 degrees east longitude), with a focal depth of 10 kilometers.

When the earthquake hit Yibin, Sichuan today, students at Wangjiazhen Middle School in Gong County responded immediately upon hearing the warning. Their actions were a textbook example of how to escape danger. According to the school classroom surveillance, a class at Wangjiazhen Middle School in Gong County was reading in the morning. When the earthquake warning sounded, the students quickly squatted down with their heads covered, and waited for the earthquake to end before evacuating out of the classroom in an orderly manner.

Acting immediately upon hearing an alarm does not mean running away. Escape from danger also requires rules. So what should students do when they hear an earthquake warning at school? What should they do if they are not in the classroom?

When you receive an orange or red earthquake warning message at school, take immediate action based on your location!

1. Students on the playground: squat down quickly, put your hands on your head, and remember to avoid dangerous areas that are easy to fall or collapse, such as basketball stands, flagpoles, teaching buildings, etc. Do not run back to the classroom!

2. Students on the lower floors: If time permits, quickly escape from the teaching building and evacuate to a safe place under the teacher's instructions.

3. Students who have no time to evacuate: hide under the desks, hold on to the legs with both hands. Students hiding next to the desks should protect their heads with their schoolbags or hands. Be careful not to hide under objects that are easy to fall, such as air conditioners and ceiling fans.

4. Students in the corridor: Immediately squat against the inner wall. Remember not to hide near the windows to avoid being scratched by the glass when the windows shatter.

5. For students in the school auditorium: squat between the rows of chairs and be careful to avoid falling objects such as speakers and wall lamps.

After the shaking stops, you should follow the teacher's instructions and evacuate in order according to grade and class. You can use your schoolbag to protect your head when evacuating. Do not crowd or crowd to avoid stampede accidents. In normal times, seriously participate in earthquake escape drills organized by the school and familiarize yourself with the evacuation routes and venues.
