National Bureau of Statistics: my country's online retail sales reached 7099.1 billion yuan in the first half of 2024, a year-on-year increase of 9.8%

Statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics show that China's online retail sales reached 7099.1 billion yuan in the first half of this year. From January to June, the total retail sales of consumer goods reached 23596.9 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.7%; the national online retail sales reached 7099.1 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 9.8%. Among them, the online retail sales of physical goods reached 5959.6 billion yuan, an increase of 8.8%, accounting for 25.3% of the total retail sales of consumer goods. The online retail sales of food, clothing, and daily necessities increased significantly by 17.8%, 7.0%, and 7.8%, respectively.

A spokesperson for the National Bureau of Statistics said that new technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence have spawned new consumption scenarios, and new consumption models such as live streaming and instant delivery have continued to emerge, driving the online retail sales of physical goods to grow by 8.8% year-on-year and the express delivery volume to exceed 80 billion pieces.

In addition, according to the China Retail Climate Index (CRPI) for July released by the China General Chamber of Commerce, the e-commerce total physical sales index was 50.2%, down 4.2 percentage points from the previous month and remained in the expansion range.

The e-commerce customer unit price index was 50.0%, up 1.6 percentage points from the previous month. Some analysts believe that the rebound in e-commerce customer unit price in July was due to the end of mid-year e-commerce promotional activities and a decline in the proportion of "wool-pulling" consumption.
