Radial: 2022 Holiday Shopping Season E-Retail Report

Holiday shopping has changed significantly as more consumers do the majority of their shopping online.

Although holiday retail sales grew 8.5% in 2021, ongoing economic pressures could put pressure on this year's holiday season.

Most businesses must focus on creating retail experiences that engage and delight while increasing profits.

Key insights:

49% of consumers feel they are very well prepared for the holiday shopping season; 24% feel they are very well prepared.

56% of respondents expect that 50% to 75% of their retail spending will be completed through digital channels this holiday shopping season.

82% of consumers will spend 50% to 75% of their annual budget on this year's holiday shopping season, a significant increase from last year.

46% expect to buy gifts earlier this year, and 45% expect to be concerned about health and safety when shopping in-store.

43% of consumers are loyal to retailers and brands they purchased from in the past year.

46% of retailers are leveraging in-store customer analytics and in-store robotics; 45% are leveraging foot traffic analytics this year.

46% of respondents expect more transactions to be conducted through mobile channels this holiday shopping season; 50% expect the number of transactions through mobile channels to be roughly the same.

54% of respondents said their companies are currently utilizing or considering outsourcing services for the upcoming holiday shopping season.

42% of retailers are currently outsourcing or considering outsourcing customer service as part of their customer experience (CX) strategy.

45% of respondents are currently outsourcing or considering outsourcing B2B lead generation as part of their CX strategy.

Thirty-six percent said raising prices was their biggest strategic change in response to new trends in consumer spending.

65% of respondents expect overall consumer spending to increase this holiday shopping season compared to last year. However, 33% expect it to decrease.

Nearly half of respondents are very confident in their ability to provide a seamless returns process (47%), fulfill orders (43%) and increase customer loyalty (41%).
