Bazaarvoice: Half of consumers interested in technology that enhances their shopping experience

In the past, shoppers have shown considerable interest in technology that can help make their shopping experience more interesting or meaningful. This sentiment has not changed, with about half (47%) of shoppers worldwide excited about the potential of technology to enhance the shopping experience.

While previous data showed a clear decline in QR code usage among U.S. adults over the past few years, recent research shows an increase in consumers who want to see companies use QR codes. Bazaarvoice’s survey supports this, with many shoppers happy to see retailers offer QR codes for contactless checkout (38%) and QR codes that can be scanned to read reviews (34%).

Some shoppers are also excited to see technologies such as virtual displays showing other customers’ reviews, photos and videos (32%), real-time and up-to-date in-store star ratings based on customer feedback (31%), and interactive digital screens (29%). Fewer are enthusiastic about virtual try-on (24%) and checkout-free AR technology (24%).

Some retailers already plan to implement QR codes for contactless checkout (39%) and reading reviews (34%); about a third also plan to implement interactive digital screens (33%) and virtual stores for customer interactions (34%).

Shoppers and retailers disagree on technologies that can improve the customer experience, but agree on what factors hinder the shopping experience, including excessive price increases, dissatisfaction with customer service experiences, previous bad experiences, and dissatisfaction with products.
