YouGov: 40% of parents plan to spend more on gaming gifts

Video games are set to have a big holiday season. A November 2019 YouGov survey found that 40% of parents with children expect to spend more on game gifts this year than last year.

According to CNN, the Nintendo Switch was one of the top-selling products on Black Friday, and data from YouGov shows that at least one in five parents plans to buy a PlayStation 4 (22%) or a Nintendo Switch (21%) this holiday season.

Strong sales expected

This is shaping up to be a strong season for video game sales, as 40% of parents intend to spend more than last year.

Parents with children expect to spend $180 on new games and gaming content, with one in every five dollars going toward purchasing in-game content.

Parents of gamers expect to buy five games, and nearly half (47%) of respondents also expect to buy a new console this holiday shopping season.

When deciding what games to buy for their children, the vast majority (88%) of parents will browse online, while 62% will browse in retail stores. In general, those parents who browse online will go to retail websites such as Amazon, Walmart, Target and GameStop. Nearly one-third of respondents (31%) plan to shop primarily online.

Earlier this year, Microsoft and Sony announced that their new gaming consoles would be released in 2020. Just over half (56%) of Americans are aware of either Microsoft’s Xbox Project Scarlett or Sony’s PlayStation 5.

Among those parents who know about the release of new game consoles, only 6% will reduce their game spending in this area due to the release of new consoles next year.

Of those parents who are aware of the upcoming console releases, nearly half (49%) said it would not impact their intention to purchase a new console this holiday season, while 22% will wait until next year for a new console to be released.

Nearly one in five parents (18%) said they were more likely to buy a Switch this year now that they know a new console will be released next year.

Additionally, 18% of respondents will wait until next year to purchase a current-generation Xbox One or PlayStation 4 at a discounted price.
