iVend Retail: More than 80% of Internet users have used “buy online, pick up in store”

According to a survey by iVend Retail, 40% of consumers worldwide believe that "buy online, pick up in store" (BOPUS) is the most valuable experience.

Last year, 81.4% of internet users worldwide were attracted by the convenience and speed of the service and ordered online and picked up their goods in-store (an increase of nearly 30% from the previous year). Nearly half said they used BOPUS to avoid paying for shipping, followed by saving time (45%).

“This service isn’t just good for consumers,” said Martín Utreras, eMarketer’s vice president of forecasting. “BOPUS offers tangible benefits to retailers as well. Consumers get convenience, instant gratification, and avoidance of shipping costs. Retailers can reduce operating costs, which gives them the opportunity to bring customers back to physical stores and generate more sales.”

Consumers are also open to new retail experiences. Half of consumers recently surveyed by Doddle said they use BOPUS to decide where to shop online, and 85% of consumers buy more items when they order online.

But timing is also important. iVend Retail found that same-day product retrieval is the third most important feature of BOPUS. However, only about one-third of retailers worldwide are able to complete BOPUS in 24 hours or less.

Europe has made great strides in logistics recently, as more consumers expect their products to be shipped immediately after purchase and want to be able to check the quality of the product upon receipt.

As the options grow, so does the appeal of BOPUS: According to a January 2019 NRF study, 63% of U.S. consumers want to use a locker, 56% want groceries delivered to the trunk of their car, and half want to retrieve items from a locker.
