As more convenient payment methods are rapidly gaining popularity in countries around the world, everyone is thinking about one question: what role will cash play in the future? YouGov's survey of consumers' daily in-store payments in the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Indonesia, Denmark, Sweden and Germany shows that although some consumers use mobile payments, Americans are still skeptical about a cashless society and prefer credit and debit cards.

Nearly three-quarters of Americans sometimes pay with cash (72%), behind Indonesia (92%), Germany (89%), China (86%) and the United Kingdom (82%).

Bank cards are the new kings of this era, and YouGov data confirms this, with nearly 9 in 10 Americans (86%) using credit cards to pay bills. In the United States, the most popular credit card payment method is chip (47%), followed by swipe (34%), and a small number of contactless cards (5%). The United Kingdom (79%) and Sweden (76%) are as fond of using credit cards as Americans.

Less than one in five Americans use cash every day (19%). Globally, only Denmark (7%) and Sweden (6%) are less willing to use cash, while Indonesia (80%), China (34%) and Germany (33%) are more willing to use cash on a daily basis.

However, a completely cashless society does not seem to be necessary. One in four Americans think the country will never become cashless (26%). 46% of Americans think the United States will eventually become a cashless country, the lowest among all countries. Three-quarters of Indonesian consumers think their country will become completely cashless, followed by Denmark (68%) and Sweden (67%).
