EcommerceBytes conducted a seller survey on the return rates of Amazon, eBay and Etsy. The results showed that Amazon had the highest return rate of 3%, eBay was 2.3%, and Etsy had the lowest return rate of 1.2%.

The Amazon sellers surveyed said that Amazon has restrictions on product descriptions in listings, and sellers are sometimes unable to provide complete product details, or are not allowed to modify existing descriptions, or the listings they copy are incomplete, which can cause errors for buyers. One seller said that his return rate on the Amazon platform is 20 times that of eBay.

Some sellers also said that it is convenient to return goods on the Amazon platform, and there is almost no return fee, so buyers return goods more often. In addition, Amazon has a defective claim, and consumers often use this rule to return goods for free, claiming that they have purchased defective products, even though there is actually no problem with the product.

eBay Platform

eBay sellers said that they can control product descriptions on the eBay platform, so the return rate will be lower.

However, some sellers believe that some buyers on eBay will blackmail and demand a partial refund, and many sellers give in in order not to return the goods, causing these people to become more aggressive, resulting in a high return rate, and eBay has not taken any punitive measures.

Some sellers also feel that under the influence of Amazon, eBay is increasingly encouraging buyers to return goods.

Etsy

Sellers on this platform have no complaints about the return rate and consumers. "Sellers on this platform are easier to please than on the other two platforms," ​​said one seller. "Buyers on this platform are more pure. The vast majority of returns are related to not reading the product details carefully."

Another seller said that he has been selling on Etsy for four or five years and has never encountered a return.
