【English Name】 Rhizoma Osmundae

[Alias] Daguancong, Weiguanzhong, Dayelangyi

[Source] It is the rhizome and base of petiole of Osmunda japonice Thunb., a plant of the Osmundaaceae family. Harvested throughout the year, the above-ground parts are cut off and sun-dried.

[Original form] Perennial herb, 50-100cm tall. The rhizome is short and tuberous. The leaves are clustered, dimorphic, densely covered with hairs when young; the vegetative leaves are triangular-broad-ovate, 30-50 cm long, 25-40 cm wide, with two pinnates below the top, the pinnae are lanceolate, slightly obtuse at the tip, rounded cuneate at the base, with fine serrations on the edges, and the veins are forked; the pinnae of the spore leaves are extremely narrow, curled into a linear shape, with dense sporangia along both sides of the main vein, and die when mature, sometimes vegetative pinnae and spore pinnae grow on the same leaf.

[Habitat distribution] Growing on hillsides, by streams under forests, and by roadsides at the foot of mountains. It is produced in warm temperate and subtropical areas south of the Qinling Mountains.

[Properties] This product is slightly cylindrical, slightly curved, 10 to 17 cm long and 3 to 6 cm in diameter. The rhizome has no scales, with dense petiole residues on the upper side and numerous brown-black, curved fine roots on the lower side. The base of the petiole is flat cylindrical and curved. 4-6 cm long, 3-5 mm in diameter, with stipule wings, but the wings have mostly fallen off; the surface is brown or brown-black, the cross section is crescent-shaped or oblate, the vascular tissue is U-shaped and often separated from the outer tissue. The taste is slightly astringent.
