[Source] It is the root of Codonopsis tangshen Oliv., a plant of the Campanulaceae family .

[Original morphology] Basically the same as Codonopsis pilosula, the main difference is: except for the leaves on both sides densely covered with soft hairs, the whole plant is almost smooth and hairless; the leaves are ovate, narrowly ovate or lanceolate, 2-8cm long, 0.8-3.5cm wide, obtuse or acute at the apex, and the base is mostly wedge-shaped or relatively rounded and blunt, rarely shallowly cordate. The calyx is deeply lobed into 5 parts, fused to the ovary only at the base; the filaments are longer than the anthers, and the ovary is inferior. The capsule is large and purple-red when ripe.

[Habitat distribution] Growing on the edge of mountain forests or in thickets. Produced in Sichuan, Hubei and Shaanxi.

[Properties] Similar to Codonopsis pilosula, but with fewer branches, only the upper 1-3 cm part of the root has ring marks, the texture is slightly soft, and there are few cracks in the cross section. The taste is slightly sour.
