[Source] Medicinal material source: the whole plant of wild peony with red leaves.

[Original form] Small shrub, semi-shrub or nearly herb, up to 1m in height. The stem is quadrangular when young, unbranched or rarely branched, with the upper part of the stem, petiole, inflorescence, pedicel and calyx densely covered with soft hairs and long glandular hairs; leaves are opposite; petiole is 2.5-5cm long; leaf blade is hard and papery, cordate, elliptic-cordate to ovate-cordate, 4.5-13.5cm long, 3-10cm wide, with short acuminate or obtusely acute apex, rounded to cordate base, margin with fine and heavy teeth and cilia and short soft hairs, sparsely covered with long soft hairs and soft hairs on both sides, usually purple-red below, with 7-9 basal veins. Umbel, cyme or panicle terminal; pedicel 0.8-2cm long; flowers 4-someres, calyx species-funnel-shaped, tube 5-7mm long, lobes linear-lanceolate to narrowly triangular, 4-5mm long; petals purple or purple-red, ovate to broadly ovate, apex acuminate, slightly oblique, only the outer upper part and margins are pubescent, 10-14mm long, 6-8mm wide; stamens 8, equal in length, 1.6-1.8cm long, anthers lanceolate, usually geniculate at nearly 90 degrees, connective swelled, decurrent, connected front and back into a disc; ovary inferior, ovate, with a membranous crown at the apex. The capsule is cup-shaped, enclosed by a persistent calyx with a truncate tip and crowned with persistent sepals. It is covered with spiny hairs with slightly swollen bases, 6-10mm long and 8-12mm in diameter. The flowering period is from June to August, and the fruiting period is from August to October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Grown in sparse and dense forests in the mountains at an altitude of 100-1350m, beside streams, water and roadsides.

【Functions and indications】Nourishes blood and regulates menstruation. Mainly used for blood deficiency, chlorosis, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, leucorrhea

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decoction, 15-30g. For external use: take appropriate amount and mash it for application; or decoct it in water for washing.

[Discussions by various scholars] "Xinhua Compendium of Materia Medica": It has the functions of stopping bleeding and relieving pain, removing blood stasis and activating collaterals, and reducing inflammation and promoting menstruation. It is used for irregular menstruation, traumatic injuries, promoting blood circulation, infantile malnutrition, burns caused by water or fire, sores and scabies, etc.
