The efficacy and function of wild cohosh

Only when we understand the main ingredients of any medicinal material can we better exert its efficacy and function. Here I recommend a very popular Chinese medicinal material, wild cohosh.

[Source] It is the rhizome of the Ranunculaceae plant Cimicifuga foetida . Dig up the rhizomes in September and October, remove the stems, leaves and fibrous roots, and dry them in the sun.

[Original form] Single spike of Cimicifuga, also known as: wild vegetable Cimicifuga, large-leafed hairy wolf.

[Habitat distribution] It grows in the shady and moist grass under the alpine forest or beside the stream at the edge of the forest. Distributed in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Shaanxi, Gansu, Zhejiang, Sichuan and other places. Produced in Zhejiang, Sichuan, Heilongjiang, Jilin and other places.

[Properties] The dried rhizome is irregular and slightly curved, about 20 cm long and 5 to 9 cm in diameter. The surface is brownish black to black, with horizontal textures, multiple large stem base remnants on the top, and numerous dot-like root marks on the bottom and both sides. It is hard and not easy to break. The cambium can be seen in the cross section, which is brown-black in color. The cortex has light black longitudinal stripes. Some of the wood is rotten and hollow, and the cortex has diamond-shaped texture. It has a faint smell and tastes spicy and slightly bitter.

[Chemical composition] The rhizome contains saponins such as cimicifuga glycoside, methyl cimicifuga glycoside, acetyl cimicifuga epoxyenol glycoside, cimicifuga epoxyglycoside, 25-o-methyl cimicifuga epoxyglycoside, 25-o-acetyl cimicifuga epoxyglycoside, cimicifuga alcohol and its esters, kenolol, anmiol, caffeic acid dimethyl ether, and cimicifuga essence.

[Pharmacological action] The root extract of Cimicifuga racemosa, a plant of the same genus, has the effect of lowering blood pressure. It also has certain estrogenic effects in animals.

[Nature and flavor] "Zhejiang Tianmu Yam Plant Records": "Tastes sweet, spicy and slightly bitter, slightly cold in nature."

【Functions and indications】 "Zhejiang Tianmu Yam Plant Records": "Disperse wind, detoxify, raise yang, and clear rashes. Treat seasonal epidemics, Yangming headaches, sore throats, rashes, wind-heat sores, chronic diarrhea and prolapse of the anus, metrorrhagia in women, and measles in children. Dosage: 8 fen to 2 qian."
