[Source] It is the bark of the Euphorbiaceae plant Euphorbia pulcherrima .

【Original form】 Small tree. The stem is about 30 cm thick and the bark is smooth. Leaves are alternate and clustered at the ends of branches; young leaves are red, ovate or rhombus-shaped, with a caudate and acute tip, a rounded or broadly cuneate base, mostly entire, shallowly 3-lobed, membranous, 15 to 18 cm long, slightly equal in width, with scattered yellow glandular dots on the underside, smooth on both sides when old, with convexities on both sides of the midrib and lateral veins, and 2 nectaries at the leaf base; petiole long, covered with brown hairs. Dioecious, with terminal conical spike inflorescence, axis densely covered with fine hairs, male inflorescence is slender than female inflorescence; male flowers are sparse, calyx is 3-5 lobed, without corolla, and stamens are numerous; female flowers are densely grown, sepals are 3-5 lobed, ovary is 2-4 chambered, each chamber has 1 ovule, and style is 2-4 branched. The capsule is spherical with fine and soft thorns. Flowering period is June. Fruiting season is September (Jiangsu).

[Habitat distribution] Distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Taiwan and other places.

[Chemical composition] The bark contains bergenin, and the leaves contain rutin, berberine and its linolenic acid ester.

[Pharmacological action] The water extract of the leaves and the rutin extracted from the leaves can promote bile excretion (dogs or rabbits) when injected intravenously at an appropriate dose of 20-200 mg/kg, but large doses are ineffective. Bergenin has no effect of promoting bile excretion and relieving pain. The water extract of the leaves is lethal only when injected into the frog's abdominal lymph sac at 100 mg/10 g, into mice at 100 mg/10 g subcutaneously, into the peritoneum at 20 mg/10 g, or into the vein at 5 mg/10 g, so it is not very toxic. The water extract (15 g/kg) can prevent pyloric ligation ulcers in rats and inhibit the increase in vascular permeability caused by histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and bradycardia. A large amount of it can also inhibit the edema of rat feet induced by dextran, 5-hydroxytryptamine, croton oil and formaldehyde, but cannot inhibit the edema caused by egg white; it can also reduce the number and size of experimental stones in the mouse bladder, and increase the excretion of magnesium and calcium in the urine.
