[Habitat distribution] The whole herb is dried, 30 to 50 cm long, with a stem thickness of 3 to 8 mm, prismatic, light brown, and with ridges. The leaves are papery and thin, single-pinnate (Bindus pilosa L.) or double-triplet (Golden Plate and Silver Cup), dry, easy to fall off, and have petioles. The inflorescence is dry, the achenes fall off easily and only the round receptacle remains. Slight odor, light taste. It is best to use dry and impurity-free ones.

【Chemical composition】 The whole herb of Bidens pilosa contains anthraquinone glycosides. Its variant, Bidens pilosa var. minor, contains "plant sterol enzyme-B" with a melting point of 141-147°C, which has the effect of lowering blood sugar.

【Pharmacological action】 Bidens pilosa L. extract has antibacterial effect on intestinal pathogenic bacteria. Young stems and branches are used as livestock feed and have good nutritional value, but because they contain more volatile oils, they can give cow's milk an unpleasant odor. The crude juice squeezed from the whole herb can inhibit Staphylococcus aureus in vitro (cup method) but has no effect on Escherichia coli.

[Usage and Dosage] For oral use: decocted in water, 0.3-1 liang (2-3 liang for fresh). For external use: mash and apply or decoct in water for washing.
