Basil is an erect annual herb 60-70 cm tall, smooth or mostly smooth. The whole plant has a strong fragrance, the stem is purely quadrangular, and the plant is green, sometimes purple. The leaves are opposite, ovate, 2.5-7.5 cm long, entire or slightly serrated, with long petioles, gray-green underneath, and dark oil cells. On the terminal spike-like inflorescence, racemes also grow at intervals, with 6-8 flowers arranged in whorls, and small white or reddish flowers. The fruit is a small nut with oval seeds that are small and black. When seeds come into contact with water, they swell and become coated with sticky matter.
