[Original form] Evergreen shrub or small tree, about 8 meters high, the whole plant has fragrance, with leaves as the main component. The bark is gray-brown with gray-white patches, and the young branches have spots. The odd-pinnate compound leaves are clustered at the top of the branches, 15-40 cm long; the leaflets are 5-15, ovate, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, 5-9 cm long, 2.5-4 cm wide, with acute or acuminate apex, or caudate-pointed and obtuse, base obtuse or broadly cuneate to cuneate, slightly asymmetrical on both sides, with obvious round serrations on the edges, rarely small and not very obvious; the petiole is reddish, about 0.5 cm long. The inflorescence is axillary; the flowers are light yellow; there are 4 sepals, rarely 5, broadly ovate; there are 4 to 5 petals, oblong; there are 8 stamens, rarely 10; the ovary is nearly spherical, the style is shorter than the ovary, the stigma is as wide as the style and slightly 4-sided. The fruit is nearly round, slightly larger than a pea, purple-black or dark purple; each fruit contains 1 to 4 seeds. Flowering period is summer. Fruiting season: autumn.

[Habitat distribution] Growing in bushes or sparse woods on limestone hillsides. Distributed in Guangxi, Guangdong, Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan and other places.

[Chemical composition] The root bark contains parsleyin B, serratatin and deserratatin.

[Pharmacological action] Parsleyin B and bergamot lactone are both furanocoumarins, both of which are "photoactive" substances. They are more toxic than bergamot lactone but less toxic than Zanthoxylum bungeanum toxin. Chronic toxicity includes gastrointestinal irritation, hemorrhage of the spleen and adrenal glands, turbidity and swelling of the liver, fatty degeneration and necrosis. After rats took parsley toxin B, it appeared in their feces but not in their skin. Therefore, some people believe that its effect in treating vitiligo is not as good as Zanthoxylum bungeanum toxin (which can enter the skin).
