Herba Penglaiae is a famous traditional and commonly used Chinese medicinal material in my country with a long history of application. Today we will learn about Penglai grass.

[Other names] Bitter tongue grass (Flora of Guangzhou), pineapple grass, Wangli grass (Quanzhou Materia Medica), thunder god hammer grass (Fujian Chinese Herbal Medicine).

[Source] It is the whole herb of the Verbenaceae plant Verbenaceae . Harvested in summer and autumn, used fresh or sun-dried.

[Original form] Annual creeping herb, 15 to 90 cm long. The stem is branched, covered with small coarse hairs, and roots are born at the nodes. Leaves are opposite; nearly sessile; obovate, 1-2.5 cm long, obtuse or rounded at the apex, cuneate at the base, and with sharp teeth on the margin above the middle. The spike inflorescence is ovate or cylindrical, very dense, 1-2.5 cm long and about 6 mm wide; the inflorescence stalk is erect, axillary, 2-6 cm long; the bracts are ovate or obovate; the calyx is small and 2-lobed; the corolla is about 3 mm long, pink, the tube is weak, and the limbs are 2-lipped and expanded; there are 4 stamens, 2 long and 2 short, enclosed, and born in the middle of the corolla tube; the ovary is 2-chambered. The fruit is less than 2 mm in diameter. Flowering period is from summer to winter.

[Habitat distribution] Growing near fields and embankments. Distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hubei, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and other places.

[Chemical composition] The whole plant contains the flavonoid components guanylate, β-sitosterol glucoside and stigmasterol glucoside. It also includes Guojiang Tengding A and Guowang Tengding B.

[Properties and flavors] ① "Quanzhou Materia Medica": "Tastes sour, sweet and slightly bitter, cold in nature, non-toxic."

[Entry into meridians] "Quanzhou Materia Medica": "enters the lung, heart, and small intestine meridians."

【Functions and indications】 Dispel wind, clear away heat, reduce swelling and detoxify. It is used to treat sore throat, carbuncle, swelling and pus, dysentery, gonorrhea, tooth scurvy and herpes zoster.

[Usage and Dosage] For internal use: decoct in water, 1 to 2 liang of fresh medicine, or mash into juice. For external use: mash and apply.

[Additional prescription] ① To treat redness and swelling of the throat or single or double throat moth: Take one or two liang of fresh Herba Cyperi each time, mash the juice and drink it orally. If the symptoms are serious, take it again the next day.
