[Source] It is the rhizome or whole herb of Gynostemma pentaphyllum , a plant of the Cucurbitaceae family. Harvested from September to October.

[Original form] Perennial climbing herb. The stem is slender and ribbed, with tendrils 2-lobed or undivided at the tip. Bird-toe compound leaves, alternate; petiole 2-4 cm long, pubescent; leaflets 5-7, membranous, lanceolate or ovate-oblong, acute or shortly acuminate at apex, cuneate at base, with shallow wavy teeth on margin, smaller in the middle, 4-10 cm long, 1.5-3 cm wide, leaflets gradually smaller on both sides. The flowers are unisexual and dioecious, with male flowers forming axillary, diffuse panicles, 10 to 16 cm long; the calyx is short and 5-lobed; the corolla is yellow-green, 6-lobed, and the lobes are linear-lanceolate, 2.5 to 3 mm long; there are 5 stamens, and the filaments are fused at the lower part. Female inflorescence shorter; styles 3, ovary spherical. The berries are spherical, 5 to 9 mm in diameter, and black when ripe.

[Habitat distribution] Grown in shady and moist places in the mountains. Distributed in southern my country.

[Clinical application] Treatment of chronic bronchitis: Grind the whole herb of Aesculus multiflorus into powder, make it into tablets or capsules, take 2.5 to 3.0 grams each time, 3 times a day, 10 days as a course of treatment. Among 537 patients (all aged over 50 years old) after one course of treatment, 25 (4.7%) were clinically cured, 133 (24.8%) showed marked effect, 266 (49.5%) improved, and 113 (21%) were ineffective. During the observation, it was found that the effect of seven-leaf bile on patients with asthma who smoke is poor, but it is better for patients with phlegm-dampness-heat type than for patients with phlegm-dampness type. Side effects: A small number of patients experience nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension, diarrhea (or constipation), dizziness, blurred vision, tinnitus, etc., but they are all mild and they can continue to take the medicine.
