[Source] Medicinal material source: The bark of Magnolia grandiflora, a plant of the Magnoliaceae family.

【Original form】 Evergreen tree, up to 12m tall. The bark is gray-green or gray-black and often cracked. The twigs are dark green, covered with light yellowish brown flat soft hairs, and have obvious dot-shaped lenticels. Simple leaves are alternate; petiole is 5-7cm long; stipule scar almost reaches the top of petiole. The leaves are leathery, ovate or ovate-oblong, 17-32cm long, 10-17cm wide, with obtuse apex, rarely slightly concave, and broadly rounded base, sometimes slightly cordate. The upper surface is initially covered with curly long hairs, and the lower surface is densely covered with long hairs when young, and later only with hairs on the veins. There are 11-16 pairs of lateral veins, and the reticulate veins are denser. The flowers are solitary, large and fragrant, milky white, and 15-20cm in diameter; the perianth is usually 9, with 3 outer pieces, light green, curled outward, and the inner two pieces obovate-spoon-shaped; the stamens are numerous, 1.8-2.5cm long, and the connective extends into a triangular short tip; the pistil group is oval, 10-15cm long. The follicles are narrowly elliptical with a beak that curves outward at the apex. The flowering period is from April to June, and the fruiting period is from August to October.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Growing in broad-leaved forests at an altitude of 1500-2800m.

【Properties】 Identification of properties: The bark is rolled and thin. The outer surface is gray-brown with longitudinal grooves and scattered horizontal long strips or round drum-shaped lenticels. The inner surface is yellowish white to light brown and non-oily. The fracture surface is fibrous, without white grains. Slight odor, light taste.

【Functions and indications】Warms the middle and regulates Qi; helps digestion and strengthens the stomach. Mainly used for chronic gastritis; indigestion; vomiting; abdominal distension and pain; diarrhea
