The leaves are opposite, ovate-elliptical to ovate-lanceolate, 7-12 cm long, about 4 cm wide, gradually pointed at the apex, broadly cuneate at the base, coarsely serrated at the edge, with three main veins; the petiole is 2-7 cm long; the stipules are deciduous. The inflorescence is loose, the flowers are white and unisexual; the perianth of male flowers is 4-lobed, the lobes are short-pointed, the apex is slightly incurved, and there are 4 stamens; the perianth of female flowers is 3 or 4-lobed, the lobes are unequal, and the stigma is brush-headed. Achenes are covered by persistent calyx. Flowering period is from August to September.

[Habitat distribution] It grows in cracks of rocks in the forest, or beside damp ditches. Distributed in the Yangtze River basin and its south areas.
