[Source] Medicinal material source: The bark of Populus simonii, a plant of the Salicaceae family.

[Original form] Populus simonii, a tree, up to 20m tall. The bark is grooved and cracked; the crown is nearly round. Young branches and sprouts have obvious ridges, while old tree branches are rounded. The buds are slender and sticky. The leaves are rhombus-ovate, rhombus-elliptical or rhombus-obovate, 3-12cm long, 2-8cm wide, with abrupt or withered tips, cuneate or broadly cuneate bases, finely serrated margins, greenish-white beneath; petioles are cylindrical, 0.5-4cm long. The male inflorescence is 2-7cm long, with glabrous rachis, finely lobed bracts, and 8-9 (-25) stamens; the female inflorescence is 2.5-6cm long, with light green bracts, brown lobes, and 2-lobed stigma. Infructescence up to 15 cm long; capsule small, 2(-3)-valved, glabrous. The flowering period is from March to May, and the fruiting period is from April to June.

[Habitat distribution] Ecological environment: Generally grows below 2000m, and can reach a maximum of 2500m, and can be seen along streams.

[Properties] Identification of properties: the bark is cylindrical and 1-3mm thick. The young bark is gray-green, with round lenticels and longitudinal lines on the surface, and occasional branch marks; the old bark is darker in color, with a rough surface and large groove-like cracks. The inner surface is yellowish white with fine longitudinal lines. It is hard and not easy to break, and has a fibrous cross section. It has a faint smell and a slightly bitter taste.

[Pharmacological action] 1. Effect on the vascular system. Poplar bud resin is a mixed resin extracted from the winter buds of Populus microphylla. The wet suspension of poplar bud resin was administered to rats by gavage at 1g/kg daily for 4 consecutive days. The results showed that there was no significant change in the heart rate and electrocardiogram waveform of normal rats, but it had a certain protective effect on myocardial ischemia in rats caused by posterior pituitary hormone. The aqueous solution of poplar bud lipid extract can counteract the contraction of rat mesenteric microbrochures induced by adrenaline and promote the recovery of blood flow and microcirculation after microcirculatory disorder. It can increase the coronary blood flow of the isolated hearts of normal guinea pigs and guinea pigs treated with posterior pituitary poison. Intragastric administration of 1.5 g/(kg·d) of poplar bud lipid suspension for 3 consecutive days can significantly reduce the hematocrit, whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate of rabbits, increase plasma recalcification time and prolong prothrombin time, and reduce the "thickness", "stickiness", "coagulation" and "aggregation" of rabbit blood.
